With the average person spending 6-8 hours a day on their cell phone, there is no denying the fact that Social Media has the power to bring a sense of empowerment, or a sense of anxiety, depending on how you view the world. While many people follow accounts simply because the person is famous or attractive, I like to have my Social Media cater to my overall development as a human. I have chosen 5 Instagram accounts that truly inspire me in one way or another. What’s your top 5?
1.David Guttenfelder (DGUTTENFELDER)
I am coming strong out of the gate to show you guys how much of an intellectual I truly am. David is a photographer for National Geographic, (Honorable Mention), but his personal account is what I enjoy most. Recently he spent a long time in North Korea on special media access. Being able to see the daily lives of the people of the DPRK brought a new light to one of the darkest places in the world. Guttenfelder comes from a small town in the Heartland so he loves to capture everyday moments, usually in black and white, giving perspective to what it really means to be an American.
2. Proust’s Mirror (PROUSTSMIRROR)
The bio calls Proust “An elegant comic of taste and distinction,” although I am sensing a bit of sarcasm. This cartoon follows the daily adventures of Proust and his transcendentalist views. His humor may escape some, but the wit and word play of Proust keep this guy wanting more and more. Read through a couple and if you don’t get the jokes, go back to school ya bum.
3. Humaid Abdalla Albuquaish (HUMAIDALBUQUAISH)
This account alone makes Social Media a beautiful thing. Humaid lives in the Middle East, and he trains and raises all types of exotic animals. His daily posts show him hugging monkeys and tigers playfully biting on his hand. It seems as though he is a local celebrity, and genuinely a good guy who truly enjoys life. Seeing these beasts being playful is sure to bring a smile to your face and his video posts will make you believe that Princess Jasmine really could have had a Raja.
4. HiIndy.com (HERSTORYINDY)
I just couldn’t let this post go without mentioning a local favorite of mine. HERSTORYINDY is an account dedicated to the great history that has made Indianapolis so special. From Crown Hill Cemetery to the Parry Mansion, HiIndy focuses on historical architecture and the stories behind them around the city. They do a great job at trying restore and preserve these places that have meant so much to so many before us. An outsider would be impressed with how magnificently portrayed the 317 is on this account, but locals already know we live in the best city in the World!
5. Santlov (SANTLOV)
I have no idea how I came across this account, but I am so glad I did. Santlov is an artist who uses toys in his work. He does an awesome job mixing pop culture with famous icons like Charlie Chaplin wearing a pair of Jordan 1’s. The attention to detail is breathtaking and you truly just have to see for yourselves.
