The great philosopher Henry David Thoreau Quotes once said, “This world is but a blank canvas to our imagination.” After my stay at the hotel and art gallery, The Alexander, in Indianapolis, I believe that to be true. Although it was over a year ago, it was definitely a night I won’t forget.
My boyfriend and I had reserved the room on Travelocity without even visiting the hotel’s website, so we knew nothing about the Alexander prior to our stay. However, the moment I stepped out of the car, I was immediately impressed. There was a mesmerizing stenciled portrait of little girl graffitied on the parking garage wall.
I would later find out from the lovely young lady at the front desk that it was part of a large art installation by the globally renowned British artist Nick Walker that portrays actual Indianapolis residents. Now if that’s not cool, I don’t know what is! I remember thinking, “Wow, this place must be really nice if they have paintings in the parking garage!” And boy, was I right.
Not only was the hotel luxurious in itself, but it featured numerous magnificent art installations. Earlier I referred to the Alexander as a hotel AND art gallery, but what I should have said is hotel/art gallery because it immerses you in the experience. I got to browse the art in the lobby while my boyfriend checked us in, enjoy the light illuminating from the display of colorful lanterns at the bar while drinking a cosmo, and there is even a piece of art by a different up-and-coming artist in each room. We had planned to go out to eat somewhere in the city, but after shooting down all of each other’s suggestion, we finally both admitted to each other we would rather just eat at the hotel’s Plat 99, an award-winning restaurant and mixology lounge.
We traveled an hour to Indy to spend the night out on the town and we never even left the hotel. THAT is how impressive this place is. And for that I give the great Alexander hotel my props.
